Painted Music: Kandinsky, Schönberg & the Art of the Abstract Lecture by Timothy Riley in conjunction with Modernist Prints Exhibition Lawrence University Wriston Art Center, Appleton, Wisconsin 9 November 1999 at 7:30 P.M. for additional information: www.lawrence.edu/media/release/9900/riley.html
This lecture/gallery talk will explore the close relationship between artist Wassily Kandinsky and composer Arnold Schönberg in the years between 19111925, a time when both artists creative innovations profoundly impacted the course of 20th-century art. From their initial correspondence though their first meeting, to their participation and collaboration in the Der Blaue Reiter Almanach; letters, articles, compositions, and works of art will be examined in an effort to understand the considerable influence each artist had on the other.
Emphasis will be given to the exploration of the works of art and music as primary sources with the ability to contribute significantly to our understanding of the period in which they were created.
In addition, two lesser-known works of music-drama, Kandinskys "Der gelbe Klang" (1912) and Schönbergs "Die glückliche Hand" (19101913), will be discussed in terms of the contemporary notion that, at their core, seemingly disparate art forms are identical.
The presentation will feature a slide lecture, discussions of primary source readings and musical examples.
The lecture will conclude with a close examination of the following three Kandinsky works of art currently on exhibition in the Wriston Art Center galleries:
