Richard Clark Zane Jr. charcoal and oil paintings
At the age of three I was a self proclaimed finger painting artist, much like any other child who has dabbled in this fine media. My father would take me for walks in the field behind our house. The field was surrounded by woods that I played in so often as a child, and along one side of the field was a stream. Occasionally, my father would find Indian arrowheads in the field and tell me stories of the native people who had lived here long before us. I was fascinated with this realization of the past, and could imagine an entirely different way of life. I loved the idea of walking in some one else's footsteps. It taught me more about the place I lived in.

In years to come my interests were the same, but manifested into a higher way of thinking. I studied the ways of life and philosophies of Native American Indians. The more I learned the more I realized they had a great respect for nature, as I always have had and still do. Running around these woods as a kid, playing with the thoughts of Indians and nature and the state of the world today established the basis for who I am.

As an artist, I believe the patterns in nature reveal the cycle of life. Each cycle weaves into the next and leaves behind remnants of the past. It is in constant fluctuation. Nature is the origin of my work. I believe that the places I draw from reveal an emotional response in myself. This response is a spiritual one that allows me to embrace the essence of the place in which I am working.

Most of the paintings are done on site. Larger works are created in the studio utilizing sketches or concepts derived from nature. Being close to nature is important because it helps me to understand where I come from, and where we, as human beings, originate. Not everyone can enjoy this freedom. I hope to bring a glimpse of it to anyone who is willing to open his or her mind. Enjoy!
