ARTcnet.com Fine Art Gallery Presents Lithographer Lois Johnson
"My prints speak to my overlapping concerns - visual and sociological - factual and fantastic - of our ancient and present civilizations as manifest in natural and architectural spaces. By our interaction, landscape, cliff dwellings, suburbs, and urban structures become avenues of sustenance, protection, and escape."

Lois Johnson, the "cowgirl in the city," found the essence of her art in the visual contrasts between expansive plains beneath a big sky and the soaring architectural structures of her adopted city, Philadelphia. An inveterate traveler throughout the United States and Canada, Johnson slices newly discovered images and layers them in her works. Johnson’s prints are composed of fragments and suggest an imaginative journey as well as a physical one.

Hoodoos in the Badlands, ancient sites and subterranean earth forms appear and disappear, giving a sense of passage through time. Images of the architecture of Philadelphia are combined with these natural forms to create "city canyons." Johnson’s juxtaposed and layered natural structures and spaces architected by man often lead to a private space beyond the madness. She concludes that there are spaces we pass through to seek a way out or a new reality.
