American sculptor Joe Brenman
As a sculptor I sculpt what I see and feel. I find a connection between the human figure and the forms found in the natural landscape. I take the patterned gestures of dancers and the poses of figure models to create the geometric and organic shapes seen through the movements of their body. An important tool for realizing this is my use of the negative space. l want it to emphasize and give tension to the forms of the sculpture, and by doing so I hope to evoke the idealization of form.

I am also interested in capturing the essence of a person. This is why I am compelled to do portraits of people engaged in everyday activities, as it allows for exploration of the dialogue between sculptor and subject. Form, shape, texture, and colors are used to express the personality and spirit of the subject.
